Portugal limits soccer media rights deals to three years as TVI picks up Copa América rights

The AdC, Portugal’s competition authority, will set in stone a series of proposals to limit the duration of exclusive contracts for the media and stadium advertising rights of top-tier league soccer to a maximum of three years. It also ruled that any clauses giving a rights-holder the right of first refusal in future contracts will be disallowed, in a move to ensure competition in the marketplace. The decision is the result of a two-year long process initiated in April 2013, when the AdC opened an investigation into Controlinveste, the media holding controlled by Joaquim Oliveira, the Portuguese media mogul.
